Grief

Grief is a natural response to love, loss, and change. While we often associate grief with the death of someone we love, grief can emerge in many forms throughout our lives. We may grieve the end of a relationship, a change in identity, illness, infertility, caregiving, estrangement, unmet dreams, or the version of ourselves we once imagined becoming.

Depth psychologist and grief ritual facilitator Francis Weller reminds us that grief has many "gates." We grieve not only those we have lost, but also the parts of ourselves left behind, the expectations that were never fulfilled, the places where we have experienced harm or injustice, our ancestral and collective losses, and our longing to belong. When we begin to recognize these many expressions of grief, we often discover that what we are carrying makes sense.

Rather than something to overcome, grief is a threshold inviting us into a deeper relationship with ourselves, our communities, and what matters most. Throughout history, grief has been held in community, where stories could be witnessed with compassion rather than hurried, minimized, or fixed. Safe witnessing in relationship creates the conditions for grief to soften into wisdom, connection, and renewed meaning.

Many of us have learned that we should "move on," stay busy, or carry our grief in silence. These messages often leave us feeling isolated in one of life's most universal experiences, at times manifesting into symptoms founded in depression and anxiety. Therapy offers a different path. Through the safety of a compassionate therapeutic relationship, we create space to honor your story, tend to the wisdom held within your grief, and gently integrate loss into the ongoing story of your life.

Healing was never meant to happen in isolation. Whether through individual therapy or the shared witnessing found in group therapy, grief becomes more bearable when it is held in relationship. As Francis Weller writes, "The work of the mature person is to carry grief in one hand and gratitude in the other." Rather than asking grief to disappear, we learn how to carry it with greater compassion while remaining connected to ourselves, our communities, and what gives our lives meaning.
